Iberpay informs that, as of today, 29 April, the Spanish retail payment system, the Spanish cash distribution system, and the sectoral information services are all operating normally, within their standard schedules and processing the expected volume of operations for this time of the month. These systems are being continuously monitored in close coordination with the relevant authorities, supervisory bodies, and financial institutions, in order to ensure the uninterrupted provision of all critical payment processing services.
Cheques Subsystem
Cheques are mainly used for high-value transactions. The SNCE processes the transaction data whilst the original paper cheque is kept by the bearer entity. In the case of transactions exceeding the truncation limit, the SNCE processes the electronic images of the cheques in addition to processing the information of the transactions.
Given the particular processing procedure to process cheques, they are gradually being replaced by other electronic payment instruments that do not require a physical handling for their treatment.
Processing figures in the SNCE
The number of cheques processed annually through the Spanish Payment System (SNCE) has decreased significantly in recent years. In 2022 cheques diminished by -12,7% in relation to 2021. In 2022, a total of 20.83 million cheques were processed for a total value of 177,000 million euros, representing 0.8% of total transactions in the Spanish payment system (SNCE).
The daily average was 82,000 cheques and 697 million euros, and the average amount was 8,579 euros per cheque.
