CaixaBank, BBVA and Iberpay process first Requests to Pay between banks in Europe
During April and May 2025, CaixaBank and BBVA processed the first in Europe Requests to Pay between banks, a new milestone in the transformation of Europe’s payment ecosystem.
Transactions are successfully flowing in a live environment, with Iberpay managing the processing. The pilot programme is running in a ring-fenced (friends & family) environment with CaixaBank and BBVA as the participating banks. This pilot is a real-world trial of bank-to-bank Requests to Pay in practice, to make sure all processes are running smoothly before being offered to end-customers.
The first transactions are now being accepted and credited via instant payment, following joint work by the two banks.
Request to Pay (RTP) is a 24/7 request for payments solution where the payee asks for payment by an instant digital transaction. As soon as the payer accepts the request the instant payment is sent, received in the initiator’s account and ready to spend immediately.
The SEPA Request to Pay (SRTP) scheme has been developed by the European Payments Council (EPC) to standardise and promote this innovative way of handling requests for payments throughout Europe. Its launch is the latest step in the modernisation of payment solutions by a European payment industry committed to digitisation and innovation. The new solution will transform how citizens and companies manage their payments in Europe, providing a safe and efficient digital alternative for B2B invoicing, such as paying taxes and public sector charges, or replacing other less efficient collection products, such as non-recurrent direct debits.
With the processing of Europe's first bank-to-bank RTP transactions, the Spanish banking sector has again shown itself to be at the cutting edge of European innovation, underlining its commitment to promoting instant digital payments and creating an ever better payment experience for customers.
